Description

A rare late 17th-century English delft octagonal plate, decorated in deep cobalt blue with stylised flowers and a flying insect, attributed to London and dating to circa 1680.
The central roundel encloses a vase of flowers accompanied by a delicately painted insect, framed by a wide octagonal border filled with scrolling foliage and floral sprays.
The strong blue pigment and confident brushwork are characteristic of London delftware of the Restoration period, when tin-glazed earthenware workshops were producing bold, decorative wares inspired by both Dutch and Chinese prototypes.
Its octagonal form adds architectural presence and reflects late 17th-century taste for faceted shapes in table ceramics.
