18th Century English Delft Pancake Plate – Cottage Scene & Floral Border, London c.1730

£300.00

A charming early 18th century English delft pancake plate, painted in a soft blue palette with a delightful central panel depicting two cottages with smoking chimneys. Produced in London around c.1730, this is an excellent example of the lively pictorial decoration characteristic of early Georgian delftware.

The scene is framed by a border of flowers growing from grassy banks, each motif freely executed with a confident painter’s hand. The deep blue shading and spontaneous brushwork are entirely typical of London delft painters of the 1720–1735 period, whose work is distinguished by its imaginative subject matter and relaxed, decorative rhythm.

About this 18th century English delft pancake plate

The “pancake” form — a shallow plate with a wide rim — was common in the early 18th century, but individually painted cottage scenes such as this are always appealing and increasingly sought after. The glaze remains clean, and the colours retain their brightness.
