Description

A rare 18th-century English creamware plate, transfer printed by Sadler and enamelled with the inscription “John & Sarah Artis, Yarmouth 1769”.
The central scene is printed in black with a decorative rococo cartouche enclosing a coastal genre scene, surrounded by delicate floral sprigs to the border.
The named and dated inscription places the piece firmly within the early period of English transfer-printed creamware, when Liverpool printers such as Sadler were pioneering the technique during the late 1760s.
