Description
Staffordshire saltglaze leaf dish of large size, finely moulded in the form of a naturalistic leaf and decorated in crisp relief with an exotic bird perched amongst fruiting branches.
The surface displays exceptionally sharp moulding throughout, with dense stippled ground, veining and fruit clusters characteristic of high-quality Staffordshire salt-glazed stoneware of the late 18th century.
The feathered rim and elegant shaping suggest an attribution to the circle of John Wedgwood, whose factory produced comparable leaf-form dishes around 1770.
The composition combines refined naturalism with decorative boldness, typical of the most accomplished Staffordshire saltglaze wares of the period.
