Good matched pair of 18th century English creamware lions decorated in coloured underglaze enamels in the Whieldon style, c.1780. One faint hairline and minor base chips. £700 the pair.

Description

A good matched pair of 18th-century English creamware lions, decorated in coloured underglaze enamels in the distinctive Whieldon style, dating to circa 1780.
Each lion is modelled recumbent upon a naturalistic green base, the bodies enriched with mottled brown, ochre and blue glazes typical of Staffordshire creamware production of the late 18th century.
The expressive modelling of the flowing manes and the subtle blending of the coloured glazes reflect the decorative techniques associated with the Whieldon-type wares popular during the Georgian period.
